| Q: What does "Kaghakatzi" stand for? | |||
| The literal meaning of the word is a person who lives in a "kaghak," a city. Hence, "Kaghakabed," the term applied to the "ruler" ("bed") of a city, the mayor. The implied or narrow sense of the word "Kaghakatzi" refers in particular to an Armenian who has been living in the Armenian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem for generations, as compared with other Armenians who had been recent arrivals and were living elsewhere, particularly in the Armenian Convent of St James. | |||
